How to make the perfect log fire

This handy step-by-step guide is easy to follow and guarantees you will have a beautiful steady fire, warming your home for hours.

What you will need

  • well-seasoned logs, ideally hardwood (you can see our naturally air-seasoned hardwood logs here)
  • kindling (thin pieces of dry wood or sticks)
  • cardboard
  • fire starters

The method

Step 1

Place the fire starters at the bottom, followed by some rolled cardboard (do not use paper) and kindling. This forms a base for your fire.

Step 2

First stack couple of smaller logs on the base, making sure to leave enough space between for the fire to get plenty of air. Place bigger logs on the top, still leaving enough breathing room.

Step 3

Make sure all the air vents are open and light the pile, from the bottom, making sure that fire starters catch flame. Keep the vents open for 20-30 minutes; this allows the chimney to heat and then partly close them.
